Seed Library: Biodiversity

Biodiversity is important

Biodiversity is essentially all of the organisms living in an area. This can include animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms. Without a wide range of these living organisms, there wouldn't be healthy soil, or healthy air, and would affect the quality of produce and living for humans and other living organisms in the area.

Seed saving helps fight against monocropping

Monocropping is the cultivation of a single crop.

It's not beneficial for the biodiversity of the environment because all of the plants are genetically the same. They are vulnerable and bred for long-distance travel over quality Seed saving is important to fight against monocropping because it increases biodiversity within the environment. Seeds can do this because, within each generation, they adapt to their environment and pass it on to the next generation of offspring.

What is a GMO?

GMO stands for genetically modified organisms. They are genetically engineered seeds that are promoted as a "miracle technology" to ending hunger. Genetically modified organisms typically get genes introduced from different species. They are not naturally occurring.

What is a patented seed?

Being patented means intellectual property. GMO companies use this to claim property rights over seeds in order to forcibly prevent farmers from saving seeds, sharing seeds, collecting royalties from them, and also have them continuously buy seeds from them.
