Journal Distribution Models 

Reader access to journal content varies by distribution model: Traditional, Open Access, and Hybrid (a mixture of both models). Each model includes peer-reviewed journals, but access differs.  

Traditional Model Characteristics 

  • The author transfers their rights to the publisher. 

  • The publisher charges readers or institutions (subscriptions). 

  • They may have page fees or color picture fees. 

  • Articles are peer reviewed. 

Open Access Publishing Characteristics 

  • These journal articles are free for readers. 

  • Immediate, unrestricted access for all. 

  • There is increased visibility. 

  • Processing fees for authors can vary. 

  • Articles are peer reviewed. 

  • More exposure for the author 

  • Higher citation rates

Navigating the Journal Publishing Process 

Here are several tips for publishing in an academic journal: 

  1. Choose the Right Journal: 

  • Research journals in your field to find one that matches your research scope and audience.  

  • Consider factors like journal reputation, impact factor, and whether it offers open access options. 

  1. Prepare Your Manuscript:  

  • Write your paper according to the journal’s guidelines.  

  • Ensure your research is well-documented, your writing is clear, and your manuscript adheres to the journal's formatting requirements.  

  • Check the publisher's website for information on typical word count, formatting, and references. 

  1. Double Check your References: 

  • Before submitting, make sure all data in your reference list is correct, including any copied references.  

  • Linking to cited sources can also increase the discoverability of your research. 

  1. Submit Your Manuscript: 

  • Use the journal’s online submission system.  

  • You will need to create an account and follow a series of steps to upload your paper and any required supporting documents. 

  1. Peer Review Process: 

  • Once submitted, your paper will be reviewed by experts in the field.  

  • Be prepared to receive feedback and make revisions based on reviewers’ comments. 

  1. Revisions and Acceptance

  • After addressing reviewers' feedback, resubmit your revised manuscript.  

  • If accepted, your paper will proceed to the production stage, where it will be formatted and proofread. 

  1. Publication and Promotion: Once published, promote your work through various channels to increase its visibility and impact.

Writing Your Manuscript

Before You Write the Manuscript 

  • Read the journal’s instructions for authors (IFAs). This will include the publisher’s specific expectations. 

  • Study the journal’s previously published articles. 

  • If they allow templates, then use journal templates and follow the style guidelines. 

  • Writing tips - Focus on clarity, coherence, and conciseness. 

Writing Your Manuscript 

Article structures vary by type and subject. Follow this standard guide for manuscript sections: 

  1. Prepare Tables and Figures: Check journal guidelines for formatting and color requirements. 

  1. Literature Review: If needed, summarize existing knowledge, identify gaps, and outline your approach. 

  1. Method: Detail your research methods. Review journal guidelines and sample papers for presentation standards. 

  1. Results: Present your findings without interpretation or discussion. 

  1. Discussion and Conclusions: Interpret results, discuss key findings in order of importance, and restate main conclusions. 

  1. Introduction: Provide background, the purpose of the study, and a brief overview of your methods. Write this after the rest of the paper. 

  1. Abstract and Title: Summarize your article with a compelling title and abstract, using keywords for better online discoverability. 

  1. Be sure to double check your citations.
