Information Literacy at the CIA
The librarians at the Culinary Institute are committed to collaborating with faculty to support our students’ development of key information literacy skills during their time here at the CIA.
What is Information Literacy?
Information literacy is the ability to find, evaluate, organize, use, and communicate information in all its various formats. It is a combination of research skills, critical thinking skills, and communication skills.
What we aim to achieve
The CIA Library strives to promote information literacy values to all students by developing engaged learning strategies and collaboratively integrate information literacy into curriculum via tutorials, assignments, and course instruction.
Services for Faculty
Information literacy instruction helps students critically assess new information, become better researchers, and effectively use resources available to them through the library. To coordinate information literacy instruction for your course or department, contact Erin Irving.
Library Orientation
Bring your class to the library for an orientation session in which a librarian will introduce students to our services, spaces and resources offered.
Classroom Instruction
Collaborate with our librarians to teach information literacy concepts and research skills. We will design a customized class session for your class and/or assignment. Multiple class sessions, of various lengths, are also an option for projects.
Assignment Design
Librarians can consult with you on activities and assignments that extend information literacy into strategies and resources specific to your course and discipline.
Course Research Guides
Course research guides, available through the library website, can be created to support your specific course. These guides include content such as journal articles, eBooks, databases, videos etc.
Services for Students
Please consider adding our services and/or contact information to your course syllabus.
