Demographics & Psychographics

Demographics vs. Psychographics: A Quick Guide

Demographics: Demographics refer to objective, statistical data about a population. This includes factors like age, gender, income, education, occupation, and marital status. Demographics provide essential details about who people are, without delving into their personal beliefs or values.

Psychographics: Psychographics explore the values, interests, lifestyles, and goals of a specific group. This information helps to understand consumer behavior and preferences beyond basic statistics. For example, while demographics tell you the average age of a population, psychographics provide insight into whether that group would be interested in spending more on luxury products based on their values or aspirations.

Locating Regional Psychographic Data

While demographic data tells us general information such as age, income, or education level, it does not reveal much about people’s interests, values, or how they live their lives. Psychographic data offers a deeper layer of insight by examining individuals’ lifestyle choices, attitudes, and motivations that drive consumer behavior. Read this article to learn more about it. Then, use the zip code look up tool to find more information about the area you chose to open your business.

 MyBestSegments (Claritas)

This website lets you explore the lifestyles and consumer behaviors of people in different U.S. ZIP code areas. It organizes neighborhoods into unique “segments” based on factors like age, income, and shopping habits. You can use the ZIP code search to view a basic profile for a location, but note that the free version offers limited details.

Tips for Finding Free Psychographic Data

  • Use a Search Engine
Start with a search engine like Google to find services, institutions, or data sources related to your region.

  • Check State and Local Government Websites
Many state and regional governments collect data about their communities. Look for statistics and reports on their official websites. Try searching for your state's name along with keywords like "Open Data" or "community statistics."

  • Explore Chambers of Commerce and Local Business Associations
These organizations often collect and publish insights about local consumers and markets. Search for your state or city’s Chamber of Commerce or business associations. You can also try looking up the professional restaurant or food service association in your state.

  • Look into State Universities and Research Institutions
Many universities have departments or research centers that publish data on local populations, often available for free. These might include surveys, reports, or community studies.
